2025 Kidding Diary:
Rhythm Lets Loose
Goldthwaite Colonel Taylor X White Fields Baby's Got Rhythm
Until a week ago, we thought that Rhythm was open. We thought her prodigious depth of body was amazing, but it wasn't until her udder started changing that we realized she was actually pregnant -- somehow her kids were simply missed on the ultrasound!
We had some pretty sketchy weather yesterday, including a tornado watch. I know all about babies and barometric pressure (3 of my 6 kids were born before or during storms) so it wasn't too surprising when I looked at Rhythm yesterday afternoon and saw that her babies had dropped, her ligaments were soft, and her udder was filling.
We moved sweet Rhythm to a kidding stall in the barn and tucked her in to wait it out. The storm came and went last night and she didn't make much fuss.
When we came out first thing to start chores, she had her babies all born and was drying them off! Two beautiful spotty does and one light roan buck.
Doesn't get much better than that!
We are thankful for a super easy kidding and we can't wait to see how sweet Rhythm milks for us this year.

A gorgeous golden doe and a cute little buck!
Goldi's Treasures 5/13
White Fields Eragon X White Fields Goldilocks
Goldi is a beautifully long, deep, and very dairy doe. In the past, she has only ever kidded with single kids and hardly looked pregnant.
This year was different.
She looked massive and waddled around, groaning and moaning, for the last three weeks of her pregnancy. We were optimistically hopeful that she would have multiples this year, an idea that excited us because she has been one of our best producers, even with single kids.
Well, we were not disappointed!
The day after her due date, Goldi fussed around in labor and we kept a close eye as she hung out with the herd and got more and more restless. Of course, the day she was in labor was the day one of the kids had an appointment in town, so I left sweet laboring Goldi in the care of our 13 year old, who assured me he could handle it.
He did and he helped Goldilocks clean up her beautiful twins after she squirted them out one after the other as easily as possible! Praising God for another smooth kidding!

Goldthwaite Colonel Taylor X White Fields Jade
White Fields Eragon X White Fields Song's Melody
Last year, our next door neighbor Linda told us that she wanted a couple of Nubians again, as she had had some years ago. We were delighted with this! Because we knew that whoever we sent would have the best home ever -- and would still sort of stay in the family -- we sent Linda two very special girls, including one of my all-time favorite young does, Melody.
Jade and Melody are as happy and healthy as goats can be and both of them kidded with ease a couple of days before their due dates.
Both girls are second fresheners and oh my goodness me. They are looking amazing!!!
Jade kidded whith gorgeous buck/doe twins and Melody gave TRIPLETS -- two does and a buck!
Thank you, God, for more healthy babies and thank you, Linda, for giving them the best home ever.

Serenity's Trio 4/24/25
White Fields Eragon X White Fields Serenity
We have been watching and eagerly awaiting Serenity's kidding. She looked massive, which is not her usual during pregnancy. She is a long doe and typically holds her babies well. When she has had single kids, she doesn't even look pregnant at all!
For the past six weeks, Serenity has been waddling about, pushing everyone out of her way, and acting generally cranky. On top of that, her udder has been building that whole time, too.
Well, the day after her due date was the day!!!
She labored overnight and finally around 9 she started pushing. Serenity has always been a fantastic kidder and she pushed out her first kid no problem.
To our elation, the first kid was a doe!
Number two was a head and no legs. I went in to see if there was a leg coming, and there was, but it was a back foot up along the kid's neck. That wasn't going to work, so I found a front leg and got it into the birth canal and out came the handsome buckling in one push.
But our girl wasn't done! She started pushing again and after a few minutes without progress I went in and found a foot and the top of a head. I pulled up the chin and baby popped right out -- another doe!
Serenity, my dear, you outdid yourself! Not only did she give us two does and a buck, the does are beautiful blue roan!
Praise God for another smooth kidding with healthy mom and babies!

Pumpkin Pops 4/21/2025
We figured Pumkin would likely be the next to go when her udder started filling just a bit on Monday morning. By lunch time her ligaments were getting softer and around 7pm, she looked like she was having some contractions. We figured we would probably have babies the next morning, but would check Pumpkin here and there through the night. I decided to do one late check after I got my littlest two legged kid to sleep, so I went out at 10:40. The barn light is currently broken, but with my flashlight, I saw Pumpkin standing near where her mom, Peanut, was lying down and figured I would watch her for a couple contractions. And then I saw a little dark blob on the ground in front of her. She had already delivered her teeny, tiny single buck and was looking at him like she had no idea what to do with it! We got him dried up and moved them both to a stall where they could bond and Pumpkin could learn to be a mom. It doesn't get much easier than that!

Zinnia's Easter Babies! 4/20/25
We have been eagerly awaiting Zinnia's kidding date. She is a first freshener this year, which is exciting in itself, but it wasn't just that.
Last summer, our middle boy lost his very special doe, Aravis. The two of them were buddies from the time Aravis was a spunky kid and beyond that, she turned out to be one of the nicest does in our herd. That loss was bad enough, but early this winter, Aravis' only daughter died suddenly. Our son was heartbroken.
After losing both of those does, our older son and I decided to do something a little crazy -- we bred a beautiful purebred doe to a very nice grade buck. Usually people don't do that because it means that the offspring can't be fully registered. But we did it because the grade buck is a son of our sweet Aravis.
For five months, I have prayed for a white doe for my boy.
When Zinnia started labor the night before easter, we were excited. We watched her through the night and into the morning. Morning stretched to afternoon and finally at about 4 o'clock she started pushing.
Nothing happened.
Finally after about half an hour of pushing on and off, I went in and pulled out a beautiful, big brown buckling. A couple of minutes later, Zinnia started pushing again and out came some long blond legs followed by a white head! I would have been jumping if I hadn't been sitting on the ground as the beautiful white/blonde doeling slipped into my hands.
This Easter, we got to celebrate the resurrection of our Lord and also a precious gift of love for our sweet boy. Thank you, God!

Nelly's Surprises... 4/14/2025
White Fields Nelly X White Fields Abraham's Tribute
Nelly was massive. Her belly was so big that I couldn't touch fingers if I reached all the way around her middle. She just had a single doeling last year when she kidded as a yearling first freshener, so we have been excited to imagine how she would milk after kidding with multiples since she obviously had a load in there this year.
We came to the barn for chores Monday morning and Nelly had two surprises in store for us. First, we had her due date as the 21st of April because she was bred twice, seven days apart, and we figured the second date for when she had actually settled. When we walked in to see her udder very clearly filling for kidding, we realized that she must have taken that first breeding and was kidding a whole week earlier than expected! Surprise!
Nelly labored steadily all day and around lunch time we put her in a kidding stall since she wanted to be by herself anyway. She happily kept laboring and finally started pushing around 4 o'clock. She was working hard and things were moving very slowly, so I grabbed onto baby feet to help move things along. They were big feet, followed by a big head and a big body. We let Nelly clean her stunning black buckling and waited for the next kid. We just kept waiting... About 20 minutes after the buckling was born, with no pushing or any other indication the next kid was ready to come, Nelly stood up and I could bounce her belly to see about whether there actually was a next kid.
All I felt was mush. Surprise!
All Nelly had in that massive belly was a single buckling!
It took a minute to get over that shock, but we are just thrilled with her beautiful boy. She is, too, and is a very protective, loving mama.
We are grateful to God for another smooth kidding. And for these goofy creatures who always keep us guessing...

Babies for Blessing 3/29/2025
Goldthwaite Blessing X Goldthwaite Colonel Taylor
We had been watching sweet Blessing closely as her due date approached. She was massive and looked more than ready for her kids to make an appearance. We were excited when we went outside for morning chores and her udder looked like it was indeed filling! As we watched her during chores, it was clear that we wouldn't have to wait too long.
She labored all day and finally started to get pushy late in the afternoon. But she just didn't progress. I really don't like to intervene unless we really feel like it is necessary, and it is actually quite unusual for us to have to pull two sets of kids in a row, but that's how it worked out this time.
I went in and felt a nose right behind the cervix, but had to fish for a leg to go with it. Once I found one, I was able to get things lined up in the birth canal. It was a bit of a hard pull, but we got the stunned black doeling out and breathing. A few minutes later, Blessing started pushing and out came a beautiful buckling!
It took Blessing a little bit to get over the shock of her kidding, but she perked back up into her sweet self. We are very excited to see how this girl does as a milker!

Miracle Becomes a Mother 2/18/2025
White Fields Penny's Miracle X Goldthwaite Colonel Taylor
Miracle looked miserable for weeks. We were taking bets amongst ourselves as to how many kids she was actually hiding in there. She waddled when she walked and moaned whilst lying down and looked so miserable, I was hoping she would go a little early.
She didn't.
But a storm started moving in the night before she was due and her udder started to fill, so we moved her to the kidding pen in the garage and watched her as the temperatures plummeted overnight. Late the next morning, her labor started to get more serious. By lunch time, she was getting pushy, so we bundled up and sat with her and waited.
And waited.
Miracle didn't get progressively more pushy and there was no visible progress being made. This made me a little nervous.
Well, more than a little.
Miracles birth was one of the most horrific kiddings ever and that came to mind.
But when I prayed for wisdom, God gave me peace and I knew it was time to get those babies out. In addition to things just not progressing super well, it was also about 8 degrees in the garage with the temps still dropping and I didn't want to wait too long and have worse problems in the cold.
I scrubbed up and our daughter held Miracle while I went in and found a nose and a foot scrunched up upside down behind the cervix. I got baby into the birth canal and easily pulled the gorgeous black doeling.
Going back in, I felt a single hock at the cervix. After maneuvering the kid around a little, I was able to get both back legs into the birth canal and pulled the gold buckling breech.
We worked quick to try and get babies dry and took turns letting them warm up in front of the fire in the house. It's a challenge to keep ears from freezing when it is that cold!
Both kids were big and healthy and surprisingly, that was all she had in there! Miracle took to mothering immediately and had LOTS of colostrum ready to go!
Praise God from whom these cute little long eared blessings flow!

A Little Bit of Faith 2/10/2025
White Fields Faith X Goldthwaite Colonel Taylor
When we brought Faith to the kidding pen last evening, I made the comment that I would be shocked if she had more than one kid. She hardly even looked pregnant and she isn't exactly a big doe with lots of space to hide kids. I was just praying it was a reasonably sized kid and nothing too massive.
Faith is one of the sweetest does in the herd and she maintained her sweetness as she labored, looking over and talking to us between contractions.
She worked hard pushing her kid out and we were thrilled to have a very handsome, not overly large buckling!
Sariah and I were talking whilst Faith cleaned up her buckling and all of a sudden, Sariah said, "Well, there's a foot!"
Sure enough that foot was very promptly followed by the rest of a tiny 4lb, 2oz doeling who slipped right out and into my hands. Surprise!
Faith is thrilled to be a mother and we are thrilled that she is doing so well.
Thank You, God, for another smooth kidding and beautiful, healthy kids!
(These kids were sired by Goldthwaite Colonel Taylor, but I don't have a planned pedigree just yet. Have to DNA check Faith to make sure I have her dad right. Guess I'll get on that this week...)

Song's Duet 1/24/2025
White Fields Liberty Song X Goldthwaite Colonel Taylor
Several weeks back, I made a comment to the kids that I thought it would be super cool if Song gave us a doeling with the Colonel's coloring -- black with brown ears and markings, but that also had Song's flashy moonspots. We were planning to keep a doe from her anyway, so I thought that combination of fun colors would be a pretty addition to our herd.
We thought we had a while to wait, though, since based on Song's last apparent heat cycle and breeding date, she wasn't due until late March.
Haha.
A couple of weeks ago, we noticed Song's udder was not looking like we would expect for a dry doe not due for two and a half months.
That seemed strange.
So I felt her belly. Imagine my surprise when instead of gooshy belly, my hands bumped hard kid feet! This was unexpected because we usually we can't feel kids until 4-6 weeks prior to birth. We have had a rather unusual breeding season here with a number of does getting bred multiple cycles before they apparently settle. Song was one of these and apparently she settled on her first heat cycle, not her last and was due about 2 months earlier than we expected!
Her udder started to build on Thursday, so we brought her to the garage kidding pen that evening and kept an eye on her through the night. Song labored steadily and Friday afternoon finally pushed out a big, healthy buck.
This guy is HANDSOME! He has the brown over black coloring of his sire with moonspots and frosted ears from his mom. We marveled at how pretty he was as we helped Song dry him off and about ten minutes later, Song started pushing again.
We were so delighted (but not surprised) when out came a black head with brown ears and a moonspotted front leg. I just knew that this was our doe! She slipped out just as pretty and spotted as her brother. Her coloring is even more exciting than I imagined. She is truly a stunning little doe!
Thank you, God, for another straightforward, safe kidding and for giving me the doe I had on my heart.
Allow us to introduce...

And So It Begins... 1/20/2025
White Fields Joy X Untold Glory Warren
We had our inaugural kidding in the cold on Inauguration Day!
We have been very excited to freshen our last Abraham daughter this spring and it was early last month that we realized that we could feel kids in her belly and that she must have actually settled the first time she was bred and was due in late January.
When the forecast came in saying that we would be having a big cold front come in last weekend and that Monday would see highs in the single digits and lows well below 0, we figured Joy would likely kid on Monday.
We were right.
Sunday night her udder was clearly building, so we brought her and a buddy up to the kidding stall in our garage at the house. The next morning she looked like she was starting labor in earnest and by mid afternoon she was getting serious and starting to push. I had hoped, based on the size of her belly, that she would have cute little twins. We realized that probably wasn't the case when she pushed out a massive head. Both legs were back and baby wasn't budging, so I went in and realized that the shoulders and chest were hung up on Joy's pelvic bone. It took a minute to pull a shoulder forward -- never could get a leg to unfold -- and then was able to help get Joy's baby out.
With plenty of towels and a hair dryer we got her lovely baby dry in a hurry because the garage was about 5 degrees at that point.
Joy's baby is a DOE and she looks just like her grandma, Black Mesa Reese's Peace. This is fitting because she is linebred on Peace!
We can't wait to see how Joy shapes up as a milker. We are already impressed at her sweet mothering instinct. We are so grateful that God blessed us with a safe beginning to our kidding season!
