Sweet Sylvia was our very last kid born in 2024. Her dam, Goldi, is one of our top does in production and conformation and we were thrilled to keep a daughter. Sylvia continually caught our eye with her correct conformation and classy style. Well, at first. The closer Sylvia came to kidding, the more we cringed. Sometimes growth stages happen in awkward spurts. Our mentor taught us early on to chose our keeper kids within the first week and then don't look at them until they are 2-4 years old. Although Sylvia is a little bit of an ugly duckling now, we are confident she'll grow out of it.
The most notable thing about Sylvia is her production. As is common with Tribute daughters, she started building that first freshening udder a full 8 weeks prior to kidding. And once she kidded at 1 year, 1 month old she went to work hard! At four weeks fresh, she was milking 5lbs/per 12 hour fill.
As a yearling.
With a single kid.
And she still has capacity to spare.
We absolutely can not wait to get this girl on milk test next year and see what she can do with another freshening or two under her belt!
Update Summer 2025: Sylvia still looks pretty wonky these days and we weren't sure how she would do at appraisal this year. We were thrilled when the appraiser was very impressed with Sylvia's capacity as a yearling -- both body capacity as well as udder capacity and production! He said she is likely to score higher once she is out of her wonky yearlingness, but she has a great foundation to grow on and scored her at 82 GVVG -- an admirable yearling score!
